First United Methodist Church exists to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Making a difference for Christ within the local and global community.
We wake to Christ.
“Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.” – Luke 24:31a
New and abundant life begins when we recognize and surrender ourselves to salvation, joy, abundant and eternal life in Jesus Christ. For some it happens in a powerful instant. For others, it happens gradually over a lifetime.
We worship Christ.
“But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.” – John 4:23
Our Lord and Savior deserves worship. Worship is not just a gathering for an hour each week, but a constant and authentic living in the Holy Spirit each moment. Still, the church is called to come together and encourage one another as we praise a great God with thankful hearts.
We walk with Christ.
“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.” – John 15:4
Every strong relationship has a foundation of strong communication and connection. Our relationship with Christ requires daily experiences of letting God’s Word speak to us through scripture, and letting our hearts align with God through prayer. As a church, we are called to dig into the Bible and pray both as individuals and with one another.
We work for Christ.
“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” – Ephesians 2:8-10
We cannot earn the gift of salvation, but from the gratitude of our hearts we can offer our lives in selfless service to the kingdom of God. This happens when we volunteer in service to the church, and in service to God’s work in the world. When we use the spiritual gifts God gives to each believer, we find an unmatched joy, and it’s when we use our gifts that we are also best able to point people to Jesus.
We witness for Christ.
“Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way.” – 1 Peter 3:15-16a
We live each day filled with a contagious hope. Hope built upon Christ stands out in this world, and with confidence and humility we let people know that Jesus is the source of our hope. As people empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are also commissioned and authorized by Jesus to tell people about His love and salvation. We certainly invite people to church, but we also invite people to true and eternal life.
